Metka Zupanič, Wish to be there

I decided to make a project connected with Bibliography generator, Wednesday, 2nd June 2008

It happens quite often: an author has to deliver a bibliography. We know that the task is boring not because it pays tribute to all these works that we read with pleasure or with interest and deeply recommend them to all those who go the same way, but because we have to make up an academic list with its many references. As we know, some go as far as copying bibliographies accessible on the net instead of devoting their precious time to this task. Thus, the simple yet creative idea to make a generator of bibliographies: we introduce a main subject, sub-subjects, key words … and we get an invaluable list. The search engine based on data diagnosis analyses recurrence of references related to the subject, with consideration of the subject, title (summary) and edition. The references will be arranged in a hierarchical order depending on their recurrence in periodicals and publications noted during the research work. A more extended version does not replace the author but it learns to help him, observing his practices and habits. The generator delivers an organized list, limited to the required number of references and containing only those ones which are ranked highest out of all those which appear in the text annotated with such a bibliography. The items which were actually referred to by the procurer are printed in bold. In order to personalize the choice the basic system will retain authors favoured by the author by quotation, enumeration, confirmation or a definitive rejection from the list. The blacklist would contain excluded names, and the whitelist those names which cannot be forgotten: indisputable references or unavoidable references of famous authors, theses of members of master’s or doctoral committees.

To write a doctoral thesis

The post was especially interested to me because topics such as self promotion, importance of artist and text communication was already present in my previous works. For example, in the project IM-PRESS ME I was focused on the importance of artist`s bibliography and cv’s in written media. In the project I was particularly interested in the level of mystification of so called “self-referentiality” of artist’s CV’s. I made a research on domestic art scene. The fact is that “PR approaches” nowadays play an important role in careers of many artists. That means that in competition environment artists need to learn how to promote themselves very well. Especially for those, who struggle to climb on slippery terrain of art market…”

Metka Zupanič’s work took the form of a labyrinth, in which the spectator had the opportunity to feel like a young artist beginner wandering around art galleries, hitting many cul-de-sacs. The names of the places became less and less visible with time of the exhibition, trod down by the visitors.
